Neptune Trine Pluto

One hundred and twenty degrees between Neptune and Pluto occurs perhaps twice in five hundred years, and the last such window closed long before anyone now consulting an almanac was born.

This configuration is real, rare and historical. The pair take the better part of five centuries to complete a circuit, so a trine between them lasts a decade or more when it comes and then does not return for lifetimes. The last fell in the eighteenth century. Any modern chart said to contain it should be checked against the ephemeris, since what is almost always meant is the long sextile that has covered the twentieth century, or a trine allowed on an orb far too generous to mean anything.

For the generations that did hold it, the trine described an unforced agreement between the dissolving faculty and the transforming one. What such a period produces is a widespread and unexamined ease with change of the deepest kind: convictions revised, institutions remade, losses absorbed, none of it experienced as catastrophe. The characteristic weakness of the trine applies at generational scale. What comes easily to everyone in a period is examined by no one in it, and is usually only visible to the historians who follow.

Read for a single native of such an era, the method does not change. The house axis shows where the ease was available, and a personal planet in contact shows whether it ever became a personal aptitude rather than a feature of the age. Without such a contact, the trine is simply weather. This is worth stating carefully, because generational trines are the aspects most often used to tell a reader they possess a rare spiritual gift, and they are the least suited to it.

What It Gives

  • deep change absorbed without alarm
  • convictions revised without crisis
  • losses taken in stride
  • ease between faith and force

What It Costs

  • unexamined by its own holders
  • commonly misidentified in modern charts
  • weather rather than aptitude

This is one line of a whole chart. The rest of it — every placement, house and aspect at once — is a birth date away.
