Volume VII  ◆  The Nativity

Your Birth Chart,
Drawn and Read

A natal chart is the sky as it stood over one place at one minute. Give the moment and the map is drawn: luminaries, angles, all twelve houses and every aspect between them.

The time matters more than people expect: the Ascendant moves a full degree every four minutes, so an hour's error shifts the entire house structure. If your birth certificate gives a time, use it.

A Short Primer

How to Read What You Are Given

I

The Luminaries and the Rising Sign

The Sun is the part of a life that does not change under pressure — the motive underneath the behaviour. The Moon is the private weather: what soothes a person, what unsettles them, what they reach for when no one is watching. The Ascendant is neither. It is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and it describes the manner in which someone meets a room before the room knows anything about them.

II

Why the Minute Matters

The Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes, which means it changes sign about every two hours. An error of ninety minutes can move the entire house structure by a full sign, relocating every planet into a different department of life. The Sun and Moon are forgiving of a rough time; the houses are not. Where a birth certificate records a time, use it exactly.

III

Houses as Departments of Life

The twelve houses divide the sky as it stood over the birthplace, and each governs a territory: the first, self and appearance; the fourth, home and lineage; the seventh, partnership; the tenth, vocation and public standing. A planet's house says where its nature is spent. Mars in the tenth argues over a career; the same Mars in the fourth argues at home.

IV

Aspects, the Conversation Between Planets

Aspects are the angular distances between planets, and they read as relationships. A conjunction fuses two natures until they are hard to tell apart. A trine lets them cooperate so easily the person may not notice the talent. A square makes them grind, which is uncomfortable and also the most common source of real development. The orb — how far from exact the angle falls — tells you how loudly the conversation is conducted.

Positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and Placidus houses, the convention Western natal astrology assumes. Nothing you enter is stored — the chart is calculated and returned, and that is the end of it.
