What a Chart Is Actually Made Of
A birth chart has three moving parts, and almost every reading is some combination of them. There are the planets, which say what kind of drive is at work — Mars is appetite and assertion wherever it lands, Saturn is limit and discipline. There are the signs, which say in what manner that drive expresses itself: Mars in Aries is direct, Mars in Libra argues through charm. And there are the houses, which say where in a life it gets spent — the same Mars in the tenth house fights over a career, in the fourth it fights at home.
The aspects are the fourth element, and the one that turns a list into a portrait. They are the angles between planets, and they read as relationships: fused, cooperative, grinding, opposed. A chart with no hard aspects describes someone with little internal friction, which sounds enviable and usually means development came slowly.
None of it is fate. It is a vocabulary for temperament and timing, and like any vocabulary it is only as useful as the person speaking it.
