Sun Trine Mercury

Consider the geometry before the symbolism. Mercury's orbit lies well inside the Earth's, so from here the planet is always seen near the Sun, rising shortly before dawn or setting shortly after dusk and never standing in the midnight sky. Its greatest elongation is about twenty-eight degrees. A hundred and twenty is out of the question by a factor of four. This is not a matter of orb or of house systems or of which ephemeris is used; it is a fact about the arrangement of the solar system.

The absence is instructive. Astrology gives the trine to talents that arrive without asking, and it withholds one here because clear thinking is never a gift of this pair alone. Mercury cannot get far enough from the Sun to describe it from outside, and the mind therefore always argues for the person housing it. What the sky offers instead is the conjunction in every case, with only the separation varying, and the reading turns on that distance rather than on any angle a table might invent.

Someone hoping to find effortless articulacy in their chart should look at Mercury's condition instead: its sign, its house, whether it is direct or retrograde, and its trines to Jupiter, Uranus or Saturn, which produce the fluency, the quickness and the precision that this imaginary aspect is usually credited with. Ease of speech is a real thing and has real testimony behind it. It simply is not written here, and an honest almanac is more useful than a complete-looking one.
