In a sudden situation they move first and correctly, which makes them useful on water, on roads and in operating theatres. Independence is assumed rather than asserted, so there is little of the friction the square produces; nobody quite gets around to giving them orders.
The trap is that novelty becomes a habit instead of a tool. Because change is easy it is undertaken for its own sake: new town, new trade, new method, each abandoned at the point where the interesting part ends and the accumulation would begin.
