Money, food, shelter and the body itself become the subjects of a long apprenticeship. The person keeps accounts in their head even when they need not. They notice the price of things. The overbuilding takes the form of accumulation and immovability. Comfort is postponed on the theory that it must be deserved. Some carry this into the body as well, treating pleasure as an expense rather than a need, and finding it genuinely hard to rest without a justification for resting.

The reward is real and it is tangible. By middle life these people generally own what they own outright, know how to make things last, and can be relied upon when everyone else's arrangements collapse. Craft suits them; so does anything requiring patience with material. Mastery looks like the moment scarcity stops giving orders, when they can spend without flinching because the ground beneath them was laid one plank at a time and they know exactly how it was built.
