Recognition is withheld until it is thoroughly earned, producing people who want to be seen, distrust being seen, and only settle the matter through long demonstrated skill.

The wish to shine is present and it is strong; what is missing is permission. Somewhere early the display was punished, ignored, or compared unfavourably with a brighter sibling. The adult therefore approaches attention warily. They will do the work and let someone else present it. They deflect compliments with a joke. When they do step forward, they are usually stiff, and they know it, which makes the next attempt harder.

Compensation runs in two directions. Some build an unassailable record so that praise becomes undeniable rather than requested, and never quite enjoy it when it comes. Others turn autocratic in small domains, running a department or a household with a heavy hand, because controlling the stage feels safer than trusting an audience. Play suffers in both cases. Creative work gets treated as a test, and the test is graded harshly by the only examiner who matters.

The turn comes when they stop performing for approval and start working for the thing itself. Craft outlasts applause. By the later thirties many find themselves in genuine authority, and are surprisingly good at it, because they never assumed the room owed them deference. Their warmth, once it appears, is trustworthy precisely because it is not automatic. Children and juniors often thrive under them: they give the encouragement they were not given, and they mean it.

  • sustained creative discipline
  • generous mentorship of juniors
  • self-possession without display

What It Costs

  • discomfort with being praised
  • creative work judged too harshly
  • control substituted for confidence
