Pluto in Gemini

Pluto took some thirty years to cross Gemini, and the generation born inside that span is gone. Its compulsion was information as leverage. Mass literacy, the popular press, the telephone, the propaganda office and the advertising agency all matured under this sky, and the cohort understood, earlier than any before it, that whoever controls what is repeated controls what is done. The pen genuinely became an instrument of state power in those decades, and was used as one.

What it destroyed was the local silence in which communities had previously arranged their own opinions. What it built was the machinery of modern persuasion, then handed that machinery to the century that followed, which put it to work in two wars. The buried material of the era was the manipulability of the public mind. The cohort discovered it, was appalled by it in others, and used it enthusiastically itself, usually while describing the practice as education.

In charts of the period the house shows where a life encountered power through speech, writing or the sibling relationship, and Mercury aspects mark the individuals in whom the era's obsession became personal: the polemicists, the editors, the intelligence men. There is no living readership for this placement. Its relevance is historical and cautionary, since every subsequent generation has inherited both the tools it built and its habit of mistaking volume for authority.
