Change is simply not frightening. The native emigrates, remarries, retrains or moves house with an equanimity that others read as courage and which is nearer to indifference about the things being left. Feeling is observed as it happens rather than drowned in, so bad news is received calmly and acted on early. Unconventional arrangements, in the household and in affection, are adopted without any sense of transgression, because it never occurred to the native that a rule was being broken.

Because the coolness is free, its limits are never mapped. The native has little sympathy for people who need the same chair, the same hour and the same face, and dispenses brisk advice to the grieving and the homesick that does real harm. Nothing binds. Friendships and even marriages are allowed to lapse without malice and without much noticing, and at fifty the native may find the address book long and the actual company thin. Detachment is a talent here and it has never been asked to justify itself.

The configuration comes into its own when the native deliberately commits to something they cannot leave: a difficult child, a long piece of work, a community that requires attendance. Only then is the freedom worth anything, since freedom that has never been spent is indistinguishable from drift. Such people, once anchored, are extraordinarily useful in emergencies, remaining clear-headed while everyone else is undone.
