Novelty causes no anxiety here, and neither does it cause much excitement. The native picks up new technology, new terminology and new ways of doing things as a matter of course, and is genuinely puzzled by colleagues who resist. Explanations come out clear and slightly unconventional, using an analogy nobody else would have chosen and which works. Under sudden pressure the mind speeds up rather than seizing, which makes such people valuable in a crisis and unbothered by it afterwards.

The ease is the difficulty. An original perception that costs nothing is not valued, so it is given away in conversation, mentioned once and forgotten, or handed to somebody more persistent who builds it. The native rarely defends an idea, because they can always produce another one. Over the years this makes a curious record: much cleverness, little claimed. Others in the field turn out to have published what this person said aloud at a dinner and never wrote down.
