Information arrives here already coloured. The native does not receive a plain fact and then interpret it; the interpretation is in the receiving, and by the time a conversation is recalled it has acquired a mood, a significance and occasionally a sentence nobody spoke. This makes for remarkable sensitivity to what people are not saying, and for genuine trouble with appointments, sums and instructions. Such natives are often musical, and almost always better at reading a room than a timetable.
Speech tends toward the suggestive rather than the exact. Asked a direct question, the native answers a slightly different one, having heard the question behind it, which is sometimes uncanny and sometimes merely evasive. Truthfulness is a live issue: not usually a matter of intent, but the boundary between what happened and what it felt like is thin, and stories improve in the retelling. Others find themselves confiding without meaning to, and the native absorbs it without separating it from their own.
Used deliberately, this is the writer's, the poet's and the counsellor's contact, and no amount of logical training substitutes for it. What it needs is external verification: a diary, a second reader, a colleague who checks the figures, a habit of writing down what was agreed before leaving the room. Drink, drugs and daydreaming all deepen the fog and are all attractive here. The native who builds scaffolding around the gift keeps the gift. The one who does not is eventually believed about nothing.
