Sun Conjunct Mercury

Because Mercury is never more than twenty-eight degrees from the Sun, roughly a third of all charts carry this conjunction, and it should be read as a variation on ordinary rather than as a distinction. The native's opinions are not held; they are worn. Ask such a person what they think and the answer is immediate, fluent and indistinguishable from who they are, which is why contradiction is taken personally. Older astrologers distinguished the very close contact, within a degree, as combustion, and marked it for exactly this loss of detachment.

The practical effect is speed and self-consistency. The native thinks aloud, writes as they speak, and rarely revises, because revision requires a second self to do the reviewing. Work is produced quickly and bears an unmistakable signature. Where the two sit matters: Mercury rising ahead of the Sun in the zodiac gives the quick anticipatory mind that answers before the question finishes, while Mercury trailing behind gives the slower one that goes over the conversation afterwards and finds the better reply too late.

The cost is the absent editor. Such natives are poor judges of their own arguments and cannot easily tell a good idea of theirs from a bad one, since both feel equally like themselves. They benefit enormously from a colleague permitted to be rude about the work, and they resist appointing one. In dispute they defend a position long after they have privately stopped believing it, because retreat feels like a concession about their character rather than about the point at issue. Learning to say plainly that they were wrong is the whole discipline.
