The characteristic complaint is of being let down. Partners are elusive, employers change the terms after the fact, and the friend who needed rescuing turns out to have needed it repeatedly and on the same terms. The native tells this history as a run of bad luck with people. Read the other way, it is a description of appetite: they are attracted to what is unfinished and slightly out of focus, and bored by anyone entirely present.
The reverse casting is equally common. Here the native is the vague one, and the opposite number is the person constantly demanding that plans be made and questions answered. Both parties are correct and neither can hear it. Arguments under this opposition are peculiarly unsatisfying, because one side is arguing about facts and the other about atmosphere, and no fact ever settles an atmosphere. Rescue and resentment take turns, sometimes over decades, with the roles quietly swapping every few years.
What resolves it is not choosing hard-headedness over compassion. Natives who hold both become formidably good at helping people without being consumed by them, which is the entire skill of the professional carer, the good lawyer for the poor, and the officer who gets the civilians out. The test is whether the native can state a limit and keep it while still meaning the sympathy. Until that is possible, every generous act under this opposition carries an invoice that will be presented later, usually to the wrong person.
