Jupiter Square Neptune

Belief and expansion grind against one another, so the native promises more than the world can hold, then rebuilds a working faith out of what remains after each disillusion.

The pattern is overstatement followed by reckoning. A plan is described to a room and, in the describing, grows past what the native could deliver even with luck. They are not lying. The picture is genuinely that vivid to them, and the gap only appears later, when the funds, the hours or the collaborators fall short. What follows is a period of flatness in which the whole enterprise looks worthless, until a new picture arrives and the sequence begins again, usually in a different field.

Money and belief are the two places it bites. This native lends what they cannot spare, invests in schemes with a moral flavour and poor arithmetic, and is a favoured target of anyone selling salvation. Religion, politics and therapy are entered wholesale and left with some bitterness. In argument they appeal to how things ought to be and are wounded when this is treated as beside the point. Drink and other consolations shadow the contact, particularly in the years after a large disappointment.

The friction is productive because it is repeated. Each collapse strips out a portion of the fantasy and leaves the part that was real, and a native who survives three or four of these arrives at something rare: a large faith with a working estimate attached. Such people are unusually good with the disillusioned, having been there in detail. The discipline that helps is simply writing the promise down before making it, then reading it back the next morning.
