Sun Square Mercury

There is no friction available between a man and his own tongue, at least not of this kind. Mercury is bound to within twenty-eight degrees of the Sun and cannot reach ninety, so the square does not occur and never has. This matters more than it first appears, because the square is where astrology usually locates productive conflict, and its absence tells us something structural: the relation between identity and intellect is not designed to be adversarial. Whatever quarrels a native has with their own thinking come from elsewhere in the chart.

Listings of this aspect are artefacts of automation. A table that crosses ten bodies with five angles produces fifty rows whether or not the sky permits them, and few compilers prune the impossible ones. Where a chart genuinely displays a Sun-Mercury square, the birth time or the time zone is wrong; a Mercury misplaced by three signs is the usual signature of a date entered in the American order rather than the European one. Correcting the data restores a conjunction, and often changes the reading substantially.

A reader who wanted an account of the mind at odds with the self should look to Mercury's aspects with Saturn, Mars or Neptune, which supply the doubt, the argumentativeness and the self-deception respectively. Within the Sun-Mercury pair the only real variable is distance and direction: how far the planet stands from the Sun, and whether it rises before or after. A Mercury retrograde near the Sun, turning back toward it, gives the closest thing to internal disagreement this pairing can produce, and even that is revision rather than conflict.
