Sun Square Saturn

The square between the Sun and Saturn sets the wish to shine against the conviction that one has no right to, producing hard-working people who succeed steadily and enjoy it very little.

Two legitimate demands collide here and both must be paid. The Sun wants to be a particular person in full view. Saturn insists that the person is not yet finished and should wait. The native consequently works harder than the situation requires, prepares past the point of usefulness, and still walks into the room expecting to be found out. Praise is deflected on arrival and re-examined for insincerity later. Criticism, by contrast, is absorbed whole and remembered for years, because it confirms what was already suspected.

The friction shows plainly in dealings with authority. A superior is either overvalued and obeyed too long, or opposed on principle at exactly the wrong moment, and often both in the same career. Fathers and father-substitutes are the early rehearsal for this. In work the native takes on the unglamorous task nobody wants, does it exceptionally, and quietly resents the person who took the visible one. When money is short the response is retrenchment rather than enterprise, which is safe and slow and occasionally the wrong answer.

No aspect in the chart builds more actual character, and the brief should be honest about the price. Development comes from doing the thing while still feeling unqualified, repeatedly, until the feeling loses its authority. Those who manage it become formidable in their fifties, with a competence nobody can dispute and a tolerance for difficulty that younger colleagues find unnerving. Those who do not spend the same decades collecting qualifications as insurance. The square never removes the doubt. It only stops the doubt from casting the deciding vote.

What It Gives

  • capacity for unglamorous necessary work
  • resilience under sustained difficulty
  • hard-won and undeniable competence
  • immunity to easy flattery

What It Costs

  • achievement soured by self-doubt
  • trouble with figures of authority
  • pleasure postponed indefinitely

This is one line of a whole chart. The rest of it — every placement, house and aspect at once — is a birth date away.
