Saturn in the 9th House

The ninth house is belief, higher study, foreign places, and the long view. Saturn there admits nothing on enthusiasm. The native requires evidence, distrusts the inspiring speaker on principle, and would rather hold three verified positions than thirty attractive ones. Faith, where it exists, is austere and unconsoling, arrived at slowly and defended without warmth. Where it does not exist, the native is a serious unbeliever rather than a careless one.

Education is obtained the hard way: interrupted, self-funded, taken at night, or completed fifteen years after it was begun. The qualification, once held, is held permanently and used. Such natives make severe and excellent teachers — unpopular in the first year, remembered for life — and gravitate to law, philosophy, theology, and the sciences where a position must be defended against attack. Travel is undertaken for work, and rarely for pleasure.

The cost is a horizon fenced in early. The native decided at twenty-five what the world was like and has been declining evidence to the contrary since, in the name of rigour. Doctrine hardens into dogma without the native noticing the transition, since it feels from inside like consistency. And there is a real narrowing of experience: the foreign place not visited, the belief not entertained, the large question dismissed as unserious because it could not be proved.
