Placement

♎︎

Neptune in Libra

Roughly 1943 to 1957, a generational placement that idealised partnership, fairness and peace itself, and discovered how much dishonesty a determined pursuit of harmony can require.

The cohort born across these fourteen years inherited a dream of relationship. Not romance merely, though there was plenty of that, but the conviction that the right arrangement between people could dissolve conflict at its root. Marriage was reimagined, then reimagined again. Peace movements, civil rights, the whole vocabulary of equality and mutual understanding grew from the same source. Neptune in Libra makes the just settlement look like a mystical object, permanently a little further ahead than the current one.

Its deception is the pretty compromise. A generation devoted to harmony learns early that a difficult truth spoken plainly will break the mood, and so it develops an extraordinary talent for the diplomatic evasion. Divorce rates rose under this sky partly because the ideal partner was an image no living spouse could sustain. From inside, the perpetual adjusting feels like generosity and fairness; from outside, it can look like a person who will agree with anyone present in order to avoid the weather of a real disagreement.

The house shows where the longing for a perfect other took up residence. Seventh house, and the marriage carries a religious weight; the eleventh, and the circle of friends becomes the promised land. Aspects to Venus are the telling ones, producing both the genuine artists of the cohort and those who cannot see a lover clearly for the haze of their own hopes. The generation's real achievement was to insist that fairness is a legitimate subject at all.
