Moon Opposite Pluto

Set opposite the Moon, Pluto puts the whole apparatus of power and intensity into other people, so the native spends years describing themselves as the mild one in overwhelming company.

The account such natives give of their lives is remarkably consistent. There was a formidable mother, or a formidable grandmother behind her. Then a series of partners, employers or friends of unusual force, each of whom the native accommodated for as long as they could bear. They describe themselves as easygoing, and by comparison they are. What the opposition arranges is a lifetime of encounters with concentrated will, and the native meets it from the domestic end of the axis, where the vocabulary for it is thin.

The situations repeat with a precision that eventually becomes hard to ignore. Ordinary disagreements escalate into contests over who is entitled to decide, and the native discovers, usually to their own surprise, that they can be absolutely immovable. Emotional blackmail is recognised instantly, having been studied for years. Ends, when they come, are final and rather magnificent. Between times the native puzzles over why calm people keep turning intense in their vicinity, which is the question the opposition exists to raise.

Nothing improves until the native owns the far end. The intensity is theirs; it has simply been kept out of the house and met at the door instead. Admitting an appetite for power, or an actual capacity for ruthlessness, is unpleasant work for someone attached to being the reasonable one, and it is the whole of the resolution. Those who do it stop being available for domination and stop needing to dominate, and become notably effective in any arena where feeling and authority must be held at once. Those who do not simply change partners and keep the plot.
